This Week in Anime [Week 43, 2021]
Date Published: Thurs, 28th Oct, 2021
As the curtains fall on October, notable developments in the world of anime are few and far between. Nevertheless, this week has played host to a very interesting lineup of headlines which seem to meet our expectations, but with a unique twist. A movie, an anime and an eye-opening performance make their way into this week's Rapid Rundown; have a look for yourself:
1. Madhouse Movie Set for January!!
2. Another Day, Another Isekai!
3. This Week in... America!!!
1. Madhouse Movie Set for January!!
Madhouse's Goodbye, DonGlees has recieved its second trailer and confirmed its premiere for January of 2022. This comes a month after the first announcement and gives us another glimpse into the adventure that awaits the DonGlees boys. MAL News aptly summarizes the currently known premise in the following synopsis:
"The film depicts the miracle-like encounter of the "DonGlees" boys. At the end of an adventure with friends that began during an unusual summer vacation, the boys arrive in Iceland—the land of flames and ice. What "treasure" have the boys found by looking at themselves and transcending the world...!"
Prepare to be mesmerized as you check out the new trailer here and join Roma, Toto and Drop on the adventure of a lifetime! This project comes from the same team behind A Place Further Than the Universe, so we're particularly excited to see what brilliance Madhouse cooks up next! This is the type of movie we wanna be in the theatres to enjoy with the rest of the bois!
2. Another Day, Another Isekai!
Isekai anime are a dime a dozen and the latest list of titles to add to the genre seem to have completely given up on retaining any sense of creativity when it comes to names ("How a Realist Hero Rebuilt a Kingdom", "I've been Killing Slimes for 300 Years", etc), so much so that we suspect they'll have entire synopses for titles by the time the decade's over. Isekai Shōkan wa Nidome Desu (English: Summoned to Another World for a Second Time) is the latest addition to this roster of unimaginative titles and we would've disregarded it entirely had we not read up on its story. The official synopsis is as follows:
"There was once a man who was summoned to another world, and saved it. Of course, he became too popular there, and turned into an isekai-normie. However, that man fell into a “trap”, and was forcibly returned to his original world. Moreover, he had to start over as a baby! This is the story of the way-too-fantastic ex-hero who lived as a gloomy high-schooler as he gets summoned once again to that other world in a very unexpected development!"
You read that right. This dude gets isekai'd twice in the same anime. You can't tell us that's not a huge deal. Moreover, the way the summary is phrased makes it readily apparent that the anime doesn't take itself too seriously, creating a formula explored by few isekai anime before it, if any.
Futabasha has published the five light novels for the series from 2015 to 2017 and the recent announcement of a TV anime gives us hope that there truly is more to this series than meets the eye!
3. This Week in... America!!!
Anime and Sports enthusiasts had much to look forward to in the recent Olympic Games hosted by Japan. As atheletes from every corner of the globe gathered in the Sunrise Nation to display their skills, they were equally vocal about revealing their passion for anime culture by reenacting several poses and taking quotes from prominent names in the industry like One Piece and My Hero Academia. All in all, it was a wholesome moment for everyone and strengthened the bonds of humanity as a whole. Making headlines this week, however, is a showcase of anime passion like none seen in the Olympics!
Jimmy Ma, an American figure skater made international headlines after his performace in the Guaranteed Rate Skate America 2021 this week. His 5 minute routine was performed to the sounds of Attack on Titan's most famous soundtracks "Vogel im Käfig" and "Ashes on the Fire" and garnered an impressive 68 point score. You can see the magic for yourself on the official video posted here!
(PS: Kudos to everyone who got the Bandit Keith reference!)
