1. WATATEN Movie Announced For 2022!
Odds are, you've seen the picture above but haven't heard of the series. Memed into infamy, the above screenshot belongs to none other than WATATEN: an Angel Flew Down to Me, a Slice of Life Comedy that aired from January to March of 2019. While its performace internationally was nothing to write home about, the anime was highly praised in Japan and holds a formidable 7.32 star rating on My Anime List. Fans of the recently released Komi Can't Communicate anime might be able to draw some faint parallellisms as they read the synopsis for WATATEN:
"College student Miyako Hoshino is quite shy around other people. She mostly spends her time in her room making cosplay outfits. When her fifth-grade sister Hinata brings her classmate Hana Shirosaki home, Miyako instantly becomes captivated with Hana's cuteness. Miyako tries to do various things, ranging from making Hana wear cosplay dresses to giving her sweets. This gives Hana a bad impression of her at first, but Miyako will do anything to grow closer to the angel who has descended before her."
(From MAL Rewrite)
Fan of the show or not, you gotta admit that the premise is absolutely adorable! The recent announcement for a movie releasing in 2022 makes it all the merrier as the cast behind the anime returns to reprise their roles, most notably Akari Kito as Noa Himesaka, Lynn as Koko Matsumoto, Hitomi Ohwada as Koyori Tanemura and Naomi Ōzora as Kanon Konomori. It's nice to enjoy some Slice of Life from time to time and WATATEN is one title we're willing to binge over the weekend in anticipation of the movie!
2. New Entry: I'm Quitting Heroing!
If we had a buck for every isekai anime there was, we'd be richer than Bezos; the genre is bloated and most entries are a dime a dozen that offer little in the way of ingenuity aside from a few twists. It was with this bias that we disregarded the early reports of I'm Quitting Heroing- a mistake we soon came to realize! Winner of the Grand Prize of Isekai fantasy in the 2nd Kakuyomu Web Novel Contest in 2017, the light novel of the same name is nothing to be scoffed at. In production since 2017, the light novel by Quantum has spawned 3 compiled volumes and its manga counterpart released its 5th volume earlier this year, already giving the franchise quite a lot of momentum behind its wheels!
The synopsis as given by the publisher is as follows (edited for brevity):
"A Retired Hero tries to rebuild the Demon King’s Army—a story for those of you who are struggling with work!
After saving the world, the strongest hero Leo became someone who is not wanted in the peaceful human world. He was too strong. Exiled, he seeks a job at the Demon King’s Army, which he had defeated and needs to be rebuilt."
Quite some plot to work with, ain't it?
The anime adaptation has been announced for some point in April of next year, but an exact date continues to elude us. Working in the capacity of the Director is Nobuta Yuu and the studio responsible for the anime is EMT Squared.
3. Mob Psycho 100 Gets Season 3!!!
The counter finally reached 100 this week and exciting news was revealed about the future of Mon Psycho 100: a 3rd season is around the corner! You can check out the trailer here and see for yourself as the characteristic epilepsy-inducing buildup reveals new cutscenes from the upcoming season. Unfortunately, we still don't know where the "corner" lies as no release date has been made public at the time of writing. It is probably safe to assume it'll come out at some time in 2022, but we'll hold our breath anyway.
With over 5 years since the release of its first season behind us, the Mob Psycho anime is certainly a series that takes its sweet time telling its story, particularly in light of the fact that its manga ended (after a 16 volume run) in 2017. Nevertheless, the wait has certainly been worth it as ONE's witty characters and rich world-building continue to impress us all. Dark horse, the licensed authority behind the English manga, lists the synopsis as follows:
"Do you or someone you know need an exorcist who works cheap? Reigen’s your guy! What’s his secret to busting ghosts while keeping prices low? Well, first, he’s a fraud, and second, he pays the guy who’s got the real psychic power—his student assistant Shigeo—less than minimum wage. Shigeo is an awkward but kind boy whose urge to help others and get along with them is bound up with the mental safety locks he’s placed on his own emotions. Reigen knows he needs to exploit Shigeo to stay in business, yet for better or worse he’s also his mentor and counselor. And he also knows whenever the normally repressed kid’s emotions reach level 100, it may unleash more psychic energy than either of them can handle!"
4. This Week in Japan: All Might Figures on sale... for a Million?!
A life-size bust of All Might could be yours for the price of a kidney! F:NEX will produce the 150 cm tall figure of the former number one hero and preorders are now open for a mere 1.10 million yen (11k USD)! With a big price tag come big boots to fill and these figures come as close as possible to the real deal, perfectly capturing the sculpted figure of the hero right down to the texture of his clothes. The final date for pre-orders is December 23, 2021 with the arrival is slated for June of 2022. An important footnote that ought not to be overlooked is a disclaimer by the company that the entire project might be scrapped should the demand not meet their expectations- an obvious acknowledgement of its hefty cost. Japan's done some crazy things before, but you've gotta be the biggest My Hero Academia fan if you're emptying all the piggy banks in your neighborhood for this figure!!!
That concludes this week's news, folks! You know where to find us next week- until then, keep living your passion!
