Top 5 Reasons Why Everyone Should Read One Piece
What can be said about One Piece that hasn’t already been said a hundred times before? It’s a long, long series that delivers plenty of satisfying payoffs throughout its 960+ chapters. If you’re a newcomer to this immensely popular manga and are wondering if it’s worth jump in to, then this post is for you. Unlike the anime which oftentimes stretches out certain scenes and is littered with filler, the manga is the full package and the one you should definitely go with.
As to why you should dive headfirst into this amazing series, well there a multitude of reasons. One Piece encompasses a large and extraordinary world filled with quirky yet resilient characters. It’s a series that strikes the perfect balance between drama and comedy as far as the tone’s concerned.
But it also has so many other things going for it.
An amazing protagonist
Unlike many of his edgier counterparts, Monkey D. Luffy stands out because of his optimistic personality and worldviews. Yes, he has a backstory that might tear you up while reading, but that doesn’t define who he is. Luffy isn’t chained down by it. He embraces who he is and always strives forward towards his goal, embracing the idea of being free to take control of your own destiny. All of this doesn’t make him weak, however, as when he has to get serious Luffy can be a beast of a protagonist.
A wide variety of well-written side characters
If uplifting goofy characters like Luffy aren’t your thing, fear not, One Piece definitely has a character you can relate to. You see, the manga being 960+ chapters long having its advantages and one of them is that there are many fleshed out characters aside from the protagonist. In the Straw Hat pirate crew alone there are nine fully developed characters. You the serious but bad with directions swordsman, Zoro, the greedy yet very calculative navigator, Nami, the womanizing chef, Sanji and many more(don’t want to get into spoiler territory here).
The VIllains
The villains in One Piece are just superb. Just like the main characters many of them also act the way they do due to their traumatic backstories. That doesn’t make them less horrifying however. Oh and did I mention that they all have unique powers and colorful and just as interesting, henchmen. For example one of the first villains inside the Grandline is a character named Crocodile. Crocodile is a shady man with the appearance of an Italian mob boss, that runs an underground organization. Oh and he can also turn to sand and has a huge hook for a hand! I won’t go more into his plans as to not spoil the story, but I will say that his fight with Luffy is as epic as they come.
The top-notch worldbuilding
One Piece takes place in a vast fantasy world, where every island’s overall look and inhabitants are inspired either by folklore, real events, other stories or just pure imagination. Here you will find flying islands, underwater kingdoms, a city where half of the population consists of walking talking toys and much more. Even the less mythical places our lovable pirate crew visit are filled with wonder and adventure. So don’t worry about the story and the locations where it takes place to get boring anytime soon.
The story is loaded with heart-wrenching emotional scenes
The cast of One Piece might seem happy-go-lucky and smiling on the surface but all of them carry some luggage, especially our main cast. And this luggage is the thing that usually inspires them to aim as high as they do. Luffy wants to be the king of the pirates, Zoro wants to become the world’s greatest swordsman, Nami wants to chart a map of the whole world and so on. When their backstories are usually shown, they’re tragic more often than not, but the characters in One Piece push through and emerge stronger than ever.
