This Week in Anime [Week 4]
Date Published: Saturday, 30th Jan
Greetings everyone! It's the last week of January and the anime universe remains as busy as ever! As always, we're here handpicking the most important developments and bringing them right to you!
It's time for This Week in Anime- Week 4 Edition!
Here's your headline rundown:
1. Major Bad Weather for Yu-Gi-Oh!
Don't worry, this is the only time you'll be happy to hear about bad weather (other than for school holidays, of course)! Big releases are on the way for the YuGiOh community as two hugely anticipated products find their market date closely approaching!
•Ice Dragons Unleashed!
Structure Deck: Freezing Chains is up for release on the 18th of Feb! Bringing much needed support to the Ice Barrier archetype, this Structure Deck follows in the footsteps of others like Structure Deck: Shaddoll Showdown in that it completely revitalizes an old fan-favorite deck and keeps it competent in the ever-changing meta of the YuGiOh universe!
Here's what Konami has to say about it:
"As winter grows colder, the icy prison cannot withhold the growing storm within, and the return of Trishula is nigh. The Synchro Monsters of the Ice Barrier break free in Structure Deck: Freezing Chains!
Originating in the very first Hidden Arsenal, the Ice Barrier strategy puts the freeze on opposing strategies while preparing to finish them off with their incredible Synchro Monsters!"
Trishula reprint? Check.
New Trishula boss monster? Check.
Evenly Matched reprint? One can hope xD
YuGiOh veterans are well aware of how desperately this deck needed some support, and Konami definitely didn't hold back on this one! Not only is the deck more consistent; it has finally has an established control strategy, brining it out from its meme-level status to something that's definitely no laughing matter. What's more is that this is a 46 card Structure Deck, making it the 3rd largest structure deck to be released in the history of the game!
•Armed Dragons Bring the Heat!
Before the Ice Dragons have a chance to prove their worth, the YuGiOh community eagerly awaits the release of Blazing Vortex, scheduled for the 5th of February!
Featuring a 100 card set size and 19 World Premier cards, this set is already primed to make a huge impact on the dueling scene immediately upon release! This is what Konami's website says:
"Level up your game with 100 new cards to play and collect including a reimagining of Chazz Princeton's "Armed Dragon" cards from the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX animated series. Play them on their own or combine them with the original "Armed Dragon" cards to create a hard-hitting new strategy that aims to unleash a brand-new version of Armed Dragon LV10 and power it all the way up to 10000 ATK!"
The more inquisitive duelists will already be on the lookout for certain cards in particular. Which cards? Here's just a few to get you up to pace:
1. Greater Polymerization (Spell Card):
Fusion Summon 1 Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using 3 or more monsters from your hand or field as Fusion Material, and if you do, it gains these effects.
•This card cannot be destroyed by card effects.
•If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage.
2. Underdog (Continuous Trap Card):
During your turn, negate the effects of all face-up monsters your opponent controls. During your opponent's turn, negate the effects of all face-up monsters you control.
Big changes are coming! Are you ready for them, fellow duelists?
2. Death Note Lives On!
June 26th, 2007 was the day that Death Note aired its last episode, and since then, the only development to occur was the release of a special one-shot manga in February of 2020, which received mixed reviews. Not only did fans not appreciate the fact that it did not deal with anything regarding Light's story (we don't know what they wanted at this point to be honest), but the ending of the manga did not sit will with a large portion of the fanbase. To avoid spoilers, we'll leave that bit up to you for consideration.
Worry not- there's a lot of good news on the way from this point!
Studio Madhouse has been repeatedly asked to produce a season 2 for the anime, but their response has always been the same- "there is no source material to adapt". With the release of this manga in 2020, there is increasing hype among fans that the studio just might consider the pleas of millions of fans worldwide.
However, while we continue wishing upon every shooting star and genie lamp in sight for the anime to get a second part, January the 28th brought with it some amazing news: Death Note Short Stories! A 226 page collection of 17 years' worth of one-shot material released about everyone's favorite modern classic anime. Some comic strips are also included within these pages, including the one-shot chapter previously mentioned.
Here's to hoping the dubbed version doesn't take long to follow suit!
3. World Trigger on Hiatus!
Daisuke Ashihara, author of the popular World Trigger manga, has recently notified fans about his sudden state of ill-health. While the specifics of his condition remain unknown (except that it's not corona-sama), what is certain is that the series will be on a month long hiatus for the duration of the March-April issues (i.e. Feb to March, in terms of months).
Here's the tweet!
