This Week in Anime [Week 39, 2021]

Date Published: Fri, 1st October, 2021

We've entered the month of October folks, and with it come several developments of note across the last week of September that we're recapitualting so you can have an idea of what to expect later down this month! As September took its last breath, it lay down the foundations for several events and releases of note, the momentum from which will carry over into this month and set the tone for even more developments down the line; diversity is our theme this week as we enter October's first Rapid Rundown:

1. Yugioh TCG Changes Forever: Mega Tins Unleashed!!!

2. Summer Ghost Movie Gets Trailer!

3. No Game No Life Returns?!

1. Yugioh TCG Changes Forever: Mega Tins Unleashed!!!

The floodgates came bursting open last week as the 29th of September rolled around and the much-awaited tins found their way into OTS stores across the world! Widely regarded as the best product of 2021 and a contender for one of the best tins in YuGiOh history, the Tins of Ancient Battles bring with them a prophecy that will change the entire way the game is played in the future: Crossout Designator is finally (as of today) tournament legal and is set to change the way tournament decks will be built from now on! Enjoying a significantly longer run in the OCG, the card has proved its value on eastern shores and is as ubiquitous a find as the coveted Maxx C- raising an argument in favour of releasing the three star vermin in the TCG as well! Unlikely as this may be, at least from speculations made by prominent Yugitubers, Designator paves the way for several changes in the way main decks and side decks will be approached henceforth!

Handtraps and existing staples have now recieved a blanket negate that once again shifts the game in favour of going first. Not only that, the game will now feature an additional layer of intricacy whenever mirror matches roll around, as a Designator activated at the right time can spell certain doom for the unprepared duelist. "Engraver of the mark", an often overlooked card, is now seeing buyouts on several stores (and is going up in price as a result too!) as a pre-emptive call is made by many to have a way to counter this... counter! Doubtful as the efficacy of this card may be, one thing is certain: Designator is poised to change the game forever and in one way or the other, the community is taking steps to brace for its arrival! Pick up your tins while you have the chance: they're hitting $30 per tin in some places already!

2. Summer Ghost Movie Gets Trailer!

The title featuring Loundraw's directorial debut, "Summer Ghost" has recieved its official trailer, reinvigorating our passion to witness this project firsthand! Hitting screens in Japan as early as the 12th of November, the movie is just around the corner and a quick look at the trailer will leave you with high hopes in anticipation of its arrival; you can check it out here! As we mentioned in earlier articles, Loundraw is a Japanese artist credited with the concepts behind some of the most prominent productions in anime this year, including I want to eat your Pancreas and Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song. Flat Studio- which is itself founded by Loundraw- is responsible for producing the film and Loundraw's work from the director's chair gives our imagination and expectations ample room to run wild!

Aves Pictures is in charge of distribution, so we'll keep our eyes peeled on any information pertaining to news on the international release. Chiaki Kobayashi will be the voice behind the protagonist (Tomoya Sugisaki) and Rina Kawaei voices the "Summer Ghost" herself (Ayane Satou). The synopsis of the movie follows:
"Have you heard of Summer Ghosts?" Tomoya, Aoi, and Ryo are high school students who met through the Internet. The urban legend of the Summer Ghost is that it is a ghost of a young woman who appears when fireworks are lit. Tomoya is unable to step out into the life he wants. Aoi is unable to find her place in the world. Ryo's bright future is suddenly closed to him. Each of them has their own reasons for meeting the Summer Ghost. On a summer night when life and death intersect, where will each of their thoughts go to?"

3. No Game No Life Returns?!

"An urban legend states that those exceptionally gifted at gaming will be sent a special game invitation, and the winners of the challenge will be whisked away to another world. When Sora and Shiro, two hikikomori NEETs who happen to be both siblings and notorious gamers, receive this invitation, they defeat it with ease. And like the legends tell, they’re transported to another world where conflicts, peoples’ lives and even country borders are decided by competitions and games.

Always up for a challenge, the pair quickly take on the obstacles that come their way, whether it be restoring lowly humanity’s good name compared with the other races or helping influence who will become the next king."

For the heretics who gave up on the series, that was a refresher course for the masterpiece that was- or rather- IS No Game No Life. Enjoying a 12 episode run from April to June of 2014, the anime became very popular and garnered a significant following that mourns its lack of a follow-up season to this very day. Fortunately, however, this issue seems to be headed towards a resolution with the recent announcement made for the release of the 11th volume scheduled for November the 25th, breaking a hiatus that went into effect as far back as 2018! A special illustration for the cover of the volume was also revealed along with the announcement featuring the siblings' next opponent: Fairies, ranked 9th among the races!

Hype is in the air once more and the prospects for a follow-up season just skyrocketed with the assurance of more material to adapt. All eyes now fall upon the manga to kick things into gear and go into overtime in its adaptation of the light novel!
