This Week in Anime [Week 36, 2021]

Date Published: Wed, 8th September, 2021

The first week of September is almost behind us, but it seems that several productions in the animeverse are only getting their gears warmed up for a barrage of greatness yet to follow! Join us this week as we take you through the three biggest announcements in the world of anime which drastically impacted the anticipation of weebs and otakus on what to expect in the weeks to come! There's not much going on in Japan worthy of note, so there's no This Week in Japan this time! All the same, here's your Rapid Rundown:

1. New Anime: The Yakuza's Guide To... Babysitting?!

2. Demon Slayer Season 2 Controversy Resolved!

3. World's End Harem Takes Careful Approach!

1. New Anime: The Yakuza's Guide To... Babysitting?!

A title that took everyone by surprise, the slice of life comedy boldly known as "Gokudou Musume to Sewagakari" has been announced to be in line for an anime adaptation, as was later confirmed by Micro Magazine just today! The initial announcement was made on Twitter by the author of the series (Tsukiya) in conjunction with a special illustration shown above! The series' manga counterpart has been licensed by Kaiten Books, who elaborate upon the synopsis as follows:

Kirishima Tooru is the right-hand man of the Sakuragi crime family. For him, the job is a perfect excuse to let his violent instincts run wild, earning him the nickname “the Demon of Sakuragi”. It seems like nothing will stand in the way of his vicious nature.
But then one day, he receives an assignment like never before from the boss—babysitting his daughter!
This is the heartwarming (or is it bloodcurdling?) story of a little girl and her yakuza caretaker!"

For those unfamiliar with Japanese culture, "Yakuza" (literally: "good for nothing") is a term used to describe a massive criminal organization and anyone affiliated with it.

*[Note from the Editor: if you folks are interested in learning more about the Yakuza, please let us know and we'll write up a special article just on it for your convenience!]

Serialized from late 2017, the main platform for the series was initially the official Twitter account, following which it switched platforms to Micro Magazine's Comic Elmo digital manga, where it continues to be updated till this day. Over 60 chapters of content has been made, which have been adapted into 5 volumes, with a 6th iteration set for release on September the 10th! A promotional video for the manga has been released on YouTube, but no further information on the anime is available just yet. We'll keep track and keep you folks updated on anything we sniff out through subsequent newsletters!

2. Demon Slayer Season 2 Controversy Resolved!

Regular readers of our newsletter will recall an outburst earlier this year when several parents in Japan expressed apprehension and disapproval at the content of the source material for the second season of the infamously popular Demon Slayer anime. The events of the upcoming season take place in the Yuukaku or Red Light District, known for its nightlife and adult-oriented services unfit for children to be exposed to. This lead to several issues and speculations regarding how the content itself would be adapted for the anime to make it more kid-friendly.

Well, someone on the censorship team must have said "to hell with the kids", because an announcement was recently made stating that the second season would remain faithful to the source material and air at late night (in the 11.15 pm slot on Fuji TV). Naturally, this won't present much issues for the western channels as Toonami and Adult Swim usually air on the nightly segments anyway. The anime has been announced to air in both the Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 seasons, meaning that it should air across a 2-4 month span. You can catch the trailer for the second season right here!

Needless to say, this decision has been met with positivity from both fans (at least, the ones old enough to type reviews!) and the concerned parents, so it seems like Demon Slayer emerged out of its controversy with resounding success!

3. World's End Harem Takes Careful Approach!

Here's another anime doing its best to avoid controversy. 2021 has seen no shortage of uproar in the anime community as far as censorship (or a lack thereof!) is concerned: first with the Redo of Healer controversy, followed a few weeks later by the Shuumatsu no Valkyrie ban in India. It would appear that other anime have taken notice and established measures to skirt around further controversy. Mother of Goddess' Dormitory did this by airing 3 different versions of its story, each with varying degrees of censorship. This brings us to the latest addition to the category of borderline ecchi: World's End Harem!

"The Man-Killer Virus: a lethal disease that has eradicated 99.9% of the world’s male population. Mizuhara Reito has been in cryogenic sleep for the past five years, leaving behind Tachibana Erisa, the girl of his dreams. When Reito awakens from the deep freeze, he emerges into a sex-crazed new world where he himself is the planet’s most precious resource. Reito and four other male studs are given lives of luxury and one simple mission: repopulate the world by impregnating as many women as possible! All Reito wants, however, is to find his beloved Erisa who went missing three years ago. Can Reito resist temptation and find his one true love?"

That, ladies and gents, is the official synopsis for the anime given by Seven Seas Entertainment and it ought to put everything about what makes this anime another controversial entry into perspective. We'd like to include the link for the trailer, but that too is age restricted... Set to premier on October the 8th, World's End Harem still doesn't have an official age rating but has been confirmed to air on the night block for AT-X, which should tell you everything you need to know!

Are you gonna watch it?
We just might!

That's all for this week's anime news folks! We'll catch you next week with more steaming updates on everything of note in the world of Anime!
