This Week in Anime [Week 24, 2021]
Date Published: Thurs, 17th June, 2021
As we move into the latter half of June, and by extension the year itself, we once again find ourselves reflecting on the developments of the past week. In stark contrast to last week's segment, news this week was diverse and presented itself in abundance- announcements of everything from new games to upcoming movies and series found themselves littered across the week, with one of the headlines being from just a few hours ago!
Without further ado, let's get to the Rapid Rundown:
1. MHA Movie World Heroes' Mission Trailer Out!
2. Vanitas no Carte Heading Your Way!
3. Fena: Pirate Princess Gets Hype!
4. Jujitsu Kaisen Announces Mobile RPG!
1. MHA Movie World Heroes' Mission Trailer Out!
As the third movie of My Hero Academia appears in the horizon, fans had much cause for excitement this week as the trailer for the upcoming movie was released and the plot of the movie finally came to light. Following a series of three cryptic messages posted by various MHA pages on Twitter in late November last year, news of the movie was quickly deciphered by fans who have understandably grown quite restless in the 7 months following the announcement! Late this week, the trailer finally cast light on what was in store for Deku and his friends, and we'll openly admit that this movie has certainly piqued our interest! You can catch the trailer yourself here and see what the hype's all about!
Here's the plot of the movie:
"A villainous organization centering itself around the "Quirk Doomsday Theory" has emerged and threatens the balance of the world by targeting people with quirks for destruction. Professional heroes find themselves overwhelmed, but our favorite interns are right there to lend a helping hand. Unfortunately for Deku, he finds himself getting much more than he bargained for when he is framed for mass murder! With a worldwide catastrophe heading their way, our heroes find themselves pinned in from all sides in My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission!"
The movie is set for release in Japan early in August this year, but news for International release still eludes us. Rest assured, Adilsons will persure this story with feverish interest!
2. Vanitas no Carte Heading Your Way!
Announced on March the 28th and set for release on July the 7th, the anime adaptation of Vanitas no Carte is closer than you realize! The next big contender for noteworthy anime of 2021 is based off Jun Mochizuki's Supernatural Shounen Fantasy manga centered around vampires, and people are right to be excited as the manga has seen significant success and popularity in Japan. While this doesn't necessarily translate to international success, it certainly lays the foundation for something great, and with a plot as powerful at this, there's little room for mediocrity to be found in this title.
Here's the synopsis (by MAL Rewrite):
"There once lived a vampire known as Vanitas, hated by his own kind for being born under a blue full moon, as most arise on the night of a crimson one. Afraid and alone, he created the "Book of Vanitas," a cursed grimoire that would one day take his vengeance on all vampires; this is how the story goes at least.
Vanitas no Carte follows Noé, a young man travelling aboard an airship in 19th century Paris with one goal in mind: to find the Book of Vanitas. A sudden vampire attack leads him to meet the enigmatic Vanitas, a doctor who specializes in vampires and, much to Noé's surprise, a completely ordinary human. The mysterious doctor has inherited both the name and the infamous text from the Vanitas of legend, using the grimoire to heal his patients. But behind his kind demeanor lies something a bit more sinister..."
Currently ranked #192 with an 8.37 rating on MAL, Vanitas no Carte is definitely a title we'll be keeping a close eye on!
3. Fena: Pirate Princess Gets Hype!
This isn't just your ordinary seasonal anime folks; Fena: Pirate Princess is an upcoming anime created by Production I.G and Kazuto Nakazuwa. What's more exciting is that it's the result of a co-production between Crunchyroll and... Adult Swim! We'll be frank in saying that's a collaboration we never expected, as Adult Swim is popular for its more over the top mature lineup (think Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and the like), and yet they certainly are not new to the concept of anime, as the dedicated Toonami block often showcases the best anime of each era. Regardless of how their involvement comes into play, what is clear is that both Crunchyroll and Adult Swim will host the show, with it being subbed and dubbed on these platforms, respectively.
As for the plot, we'll let you decide!
"Fena: Pirate Princess tells the tale of a young orphan girl, Fena Houtman, living in a fantastic alternate history version of the 18th century. Fena has been raised on an island where there is no hope of escaping the dark destiny forced upon her by her captors, to be used and discarded by the soldiers of the British Empire. But Fena is more than just another powerless orphan. When her mysterious past comes knocking, Fena will break the chains of her oppressors. Her goal: escape her captors, forge a new identity, and search for a place where she can truly belong and find out the true mystery behind the keyword: "Eden." It's the story of the adventure of a lifetime she and her crew of misfits and unlikely allies will have, in pursuit of her goals!"
It's rare to find an anime which grounds itself in reality and also tackles issues pertinent to the real world, but if we had to guess, Fena is shaping up to be not just any adventure, but one with an undertone of female empowerment, and we're all for it (if that's the case)!
4. Jujitsu Kaisen Announces Mobile RPG!
Since there's no news of note from Japan this week, we're adding this extra headline to give you something a little extra this week! Although not much has been revealed about the game, it doesn't take a genius to figure out why a game based on a wildly successful anime is making waves everywhere. The first announcements for the release of the mobile RPG came via Issue 28 of Weekly Shonen Jump and Twitter, and so far the only things we kmow are that the game was developed by Sumzap and will be available on both Android and iOS as a free to play game with in-app purchases. We'll keep you updated on any further developments on this front.
That concludes this week's anime news, minna! We'll catch you again with more exciting developments in the weeks to come!
