This Week in Anime [Week 23, 2021]
Date Published: Fri,11th June, 2021
Good day weebs and otakus and welcome to Adilsons' 23rd edition of This Week in Anime! As we neared the end of the second week of June, it seemed as if no major events were to be heard of. In fact, it astounds us to point out that there were little to no announcements of note made from Monday straight towards the evening of Wednesday; the world or anime was as quiet as it could be. Thursday morning, however, brought with it a barrage of announcements and releases which span just about every aspect of the anime world! Quite a turn, isn't it? Here's your Rapid Rundown to show you what we mean:
1. Jujitsu Kaisen Manga Goes on Hiatus!
2. Child of Kamiari Month Movie Nears!
3. Cowboy Bebop Gets Live Action Remake!
1. Jujitsu Kaisen Manga Goes on Hiatus!
Unfortunate news broke this Thursday, when the official Twitter account for Shonen Jump revealed that the Jujitsu Kaisen manga will soon go on a hiatus owing to health issues affecting Gege Akutami (its creator). The hiatus shall go into effect from the 29th issue which will be released on June the 21st. Pictures of a handwritten note from Akutami were also included in the announcement; in it, the creator mentions that his condition isn't "too serious" and that he is fine mentally, offering significant relief to worried fans.
The hiatus is, as of the time of writing, indefinite, until Akutami feels well enough to get back to work; Jump will announce the return date for the manga when this happens, so there's no reasons for fans to fret. The chapter scheduled for the June 14 issue of the magazine is unaffected by the hiatus and will be released as scheduled, so there is a silver lining to the story after all! Although it has been serialised since March of 2018 in the weekly Shounen magazine, Jujitsu Kaisen's massive success in the western world is quite recent- after the release of its anime in October of 2020, enough to propel it into the winning bracket of Crunchyroll's Anime of the Year in its 2021 awards segment.
We look forward for more amazing content and will keep you informed on any developments on this front.
2. Child of Kamiari Month Movie Nears!
Set for release this fall, Kamiari no Kodomo, better known as Child of Kamiari month, gained much attention this week with the release of a new poster visual (pictured above). The upcoming movie is produced by Cretica Universal and was financed via a crowdfunding campaign in March of 2019, making it quite unique as far as movies go. The exact details of the movie are unavailable and all fans have to work with is a one minute trailer with no English counterpart, which you can check out here.
According to the Wiki based on the movie, the plot of the movie is as follows:
"The movie's protagonist Kanna loses her will to continue her love of running after the passing of her mother. By the will of the gods, Kanna heads to a shrine in Izumo. This visit to the shrine will start a new adventure for her involving, Yato an oni boy and Shiro a one-winged rabbit."
The plot seems straightforward and is brought to life in beautifully animated scenics featured in the trailer, so at least we won't have an Akira type of situation here as far as interpretations of the movie go. We look forward to the release of the movie and are openly skeptical yet hopeful in our anticipation of its performance in the international setting, if this happens to be the case.
3. Cowboy Bebop Gets Live Action Remake!
It's been a long time coming and it finally appears to be heading our way; Netflix's life action remake of everyone's favorite Wild West inspired sci-fi, noir anime seems to be just a few months away from release! Confirmed for release in fall via an announcement from Netflix on Twitter this Tuesday, the live action remake has previously been confirmed to be reintroducing several cast members, including John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, and Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine. In the announcement this week, it was also confirmed that "Yoko Kanno, the composer behind the iconic soundtrack of the original COWBOY BEBOP anime will be creating the soundtrack for the new Live Action Series", and a video montage accompanying the announcement boldly featured the words "There's No Bebop Without Yoko". How true!
A trailer for the remake still eludes us, but we are hopeful that more updates will follow in the weeks to come. Currently, only a 3 line synopsis of the show awaits visitors of the Bebop page of the website: "A ragtag crew of bounty hunters chases down the galaxy's most dangerous criminals. They'll save the world ... for the right price. A live-action series."
Rest assured Bebop fans, we'll be pursuing this story every step of the way!
That concludes our anime news for this week, folks! We'll always scour every source available to us to bring you the latest developments on everything hot in the world of anime, so you can better live your passion! Come back next week for more: same time, same place!
