It’s been a hot minute since our last weekly issue, so we wanna start off the penultimate segment of 2021’s This Week in Anime by thanking our loyal readers for their patience; the author’s semester exams have ended, so you can expect your Saturday news with regularity once more!
As the days leading up to Christmas dwindle, we stand today at the precipice of Christmas Eve itself. Perhaps even more infectious than Omicron is the spirit of the holidays, which seems to have permeated every sphere of society. Developments of late in the world of anime have added a completely new dimension of excitement in the lives of otakus all over the world. Tis truly the season to be jolly once you see what’s brewing in this week’s Rapid Rundown:

1. New Bleach Trailer: Release Date Confirmed?!
Following the momentous announcement by Shonen Jump on the 21st of March, 2020 confirming the return of Bleach, the general public has been left with complete radio silence regarding any further developments in the project. Speculations ran wild and several unauthorized sources spread misinformation concerning the reveal... until just 5 days ago. With almost 2 million views on the original video (which confirmed both the return of the Bleach anime and the debut of an animated series “Burn the Witch”), the impact of the announcement has been felt in the furthest reaches of the anime community, with tens of thousands of fans committing themselves to re-watching the anime in anticipation of the last arc. As we entered the last month of 2021, doubts were raised concerning the validity of Shonen Jump’s video, which hinted the estimated date of release sometime in 2021.
18th of December 2021 brought with it a much-needed follow-up to the original announcement, with the subsequent trailer actually showing pre-animated footage of the returning show. “Pre-animated" is a term we use with much reservation, as it implies that the final product may appear drastically different from what’s been shown in the trailer. Nevertheless, the trailer itself does lots to improve the declining morale of Bleach fans, who’ve held out hopes for almost a decade in anticipation of this moment. Perhaps the most striking feature of the trailer is the music, which features a remixed version of the classic Bleach OST “Number One”, a testament to just how much time has passed since it was first played on TV in 2004 (incidentally, there’s over 31 million views on the original song on YouTube!). Tite Kubo himself stated in an interview his thoughts on the trailer, as follows:
“I’m glad it’s animated! And the official teaser, nice drawings and remixes of the songs! The editing is great! I’ve been involved with the anime from the very beginning as an author, putting myself in all kinds of trouble, but as a viewer, I’m hoping for something good. Please look forward to the broadcast!”
We don’t know about you, but we may not have a choice on that last matter! Confirmed for release sometime in October of 2022, the return of Bleach remains an event confined to the horizon... for now. The raging debate among Bleach fan communities at the moment is whether or not the anime will detach itself enough from the manga to allow for fights left off-screen in the manga to be presented properly in the anime. All we can tell you right now is this: we’re just glad the legendary Big 3 continue to live on in their own ways!

2. Attack on Titan: Main Trailer Out!
Just 3 days following the Bleach trailer, yet another big name in the world of anime announced its return to the big screen for one last time: Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 has been confirmed for release starting from Sunday, January the 9th, 2022! The trailer took an uncharacteristic break from the norm: it actually revealed scenes of the events yet to unfold, meaning it wasn’t a 2-minute video of obscure scenes interjected with tense music and bold text. Among the insights given were scenes of the face-off between Eren & Rainer, a view of Levi following the climactic explosion at the end of Part 1, a scene of a hurt Zeke calling out to Eren, and perhaps one of the most iconic scenes of the entire show that we shan’t elaborate in the interest of sparing our readers a major spoiler.
With its manga finished months ago, part 2 is all that remains of the series before it is finally laid to rest. While reviews of the ending remain mixed to this day, it is an undeniable fact that Attack on Titan has proven itself to be one of the most successful shows of the modern anime era; with the big day of its return less than 2 weeks away, we find ourselves embracing the inevitable nail-biting excitement as we gear up to witness perhaps the most notable ending in anime since the death of Light Yagami himself. Hold out if you can, but if you can’t handle the wait, Chapter 116 in the manga is your checkpoint to resume from!

3. This Week in Japan: Author Arrested over CP?!
Please Tell Me! Galko-chan's author Kenya Suzuki made headlines this week, and for all the wrong reasons: the 40-year-old author has been arrested regarding violations of the Japanese child prostitution and pornography laws and is under suspicion of importing inappropriate sexual content involving minors from Germany and disregarding Japanese customs laws. A police search of his home in July revealed 46 books containing such illicit material; he has been quoted as saying the he “desperately wanted the photos, but couldn’t find them in Japan.” Kenya Suzuki went missing for a week, sparking a manhunt which involved both Battan (author of Nijiiro Complex) and Kouta Matsunda (who was later mistaken for Kenya). Recent reports from the Kyodo News Service confirm that Suzuki has been apprehended; further details on the matter are unavailable at the moment. A similar case occurred in 2017, where Rurouni Kenshin creator Nobuhiro Watsuki faced similar charges; his manga was placed on hiatus for a year before resuming serialization.
