Celebrating Yugioh's 25th Anniversary with Kaiba!
The 25th anniversary of the YuGiOh manga is upon us and the franchise is allowing fans to celebrate in style with the release of a limited-time product that had heads turning all week! Offering us a unique opportunity to take a step in Kaiba's shoes, Konami has gone public with one of the biggest announcements of the year: the release of the YuGiOh Ultimate Kaiba Set! Going back to the roots of the franchise in a way that's never been done before, this product is like nothing we've ever seen before!
Remember Kaiba's suitcase?
The one he blocked literal *bullets* with in Season 1?
The one he'd carry everywhere he went in case a megalomaniac would try to take over the world and challenge him to a duel?
The one he strolled through Battle City with and stashed away rare and powerful cards in?
That's the one.
That's the legendary all-purpose glistening portfolio which managed to hold Kaiba's ego for the 224 episode-long run of the series. And it can be all yours... if you're ready to choke up the price!
While it may not be bulletproof, the real thing is no mere cosplay accessory. Functionality and design meld in patented synergy in ways we'd never even thought of before; this 8 kilogram vessel of pure dueling energy comes fitted with 14 separators, allowing it to store up to a whopping 7000 cards! Emblazoned with the 25th anniversary logo on the interior, this briefcase also contains a belt capable of holding a dueling mat safely. Imagine walking into your locals and slapping down this bad boy the next time someone asks you for a trade!
It only gets better from here. The briefcase doesn't come empty; tucked inside is a 61 card, fully foiled-out deck used by none other than the legend himself! 58 of the cards will be reprints, but 3 will be based upon cards used in the YuGiOh manga! That's right folks: this product will contain three never-before-seen cards which have been directly adapted from the manga itself! The exact text on these cards was revealed just a few days ago, and they're no laughing matter:
KC01-JP001 Attack Guidance Armor
Normal Trap
You can only activate 1 card with this card’s name per turn.
When a monster declares an attack: Activate 1 of these effects.
• Destroy the attacking monster.
• Target 1 monster on the field, other than the attacking monster; change the attack target to the target and enter damage calculation.
KC01-JP002 Life Shaver
Continuous Trap
You can only control 1 “Life Shaver”. Once per turn, during your opponent’s End Phase: Place 1 counter on this card.
During the Main or Battle Phase, if this card has any of its counters on it: You can send this card to the GY, then, your opponent discards as many cards from their hand as possible, up to the number of counters that were on this card.
KC01-JP003 Magical Trick Mirror
Normal Trap
When an opponent’s monster declares an attack: Target 1 Spell in your opponent’s GY; Set that card to your field. You can banish this card from your GY, then send 1 “Monster Reborn” from your hand or from your face-down field to the GY; Special Summon 1 “Obelisk the Tormentor” from your GY in Defense Position. If this effect is activated during your opponent’s turn, for the rest of this turn, while you control the Special Summoned monster, each monster your opponent controls must attack it, if able.
The more perceptive readers would have realized that Attack Guidance Armor is the first card of its kind in the game which lets a player's own monster attack another monster on his own field! Not only that, Life Shaver is a card that spells disaster for any strategy if someone with Mystic Mine gets ahold of it! As for Magical Trick Mirror, being a card which indirectly supports an Egyptian God automatically makes it a chase card unique to the set, certain to make it go up in value!
Speaking of cards unique to the set, it wouldn't be Kaiba's briefcase without Kaiba's dragons; the Ultimate Kaiba Set comes with three special Blue Eyes White Dragons printed in the same card format as classical YuGiOh cards (with their ATK and DEF in vertical columns next to the box of flavor text)! This unique printing makes these pieces so unique, they're unrivaled by any other form of card rarity, exceeding even Ghost Rares in terms of rarity! This not only makes the cards themselves a collector's dream, but adds yet more value to this coveted product!
Then again, Kaiba's set comes at a price only Kaiba can afford, after all: The Yu-Gi-Oh Ultimate Kaiba Set will set buyers back 33,000 JPY (approx $300 USD)! Buying at that price; that's some dedication indeed! The product will come out in April 2022, but pre-orders are open from September 21 to October 31, 2021. It remains unclear whether there will be a TCG-version of the product, but if history is to teach us anything, our lesson from the Numbers Collection Set would turn the tide of fate against us. Nevertheless, TCG-legal or not, the real value in this product lies in its value as a collector's piece; in that regard, we're sure people could care less what language the cards are in!
Until more updates present themselves, we have just one thing to say to y'all: congratulations on 25 years of pure dueling goodness! Here's to many more to come!
